Jump back into Spring!

Been a hermit all winter? Here are a few ways to get back outside and ease back into your active lifestyle!

After a long winter, it can often seem daunting to get back into the swing of an active outdoor spring. However, it doesn't have to be! Here are a few tips on how to do so painlessly.

TAKE IT SLOW

With the weather finally turning and the warm outdoors calling, it can be tempting to try and do that 10 mile hike you were able to do last summer or immediately try and run that half marathon your city is hosting. However, if you took most of winter off, trying to do too much right away can be discouraging and even unsafe. Make sure to start slow. Try a more mild hike or a shorter run! Even walking everyday can be a great way to start.

SET GOALS

Setting goals can be a great way to motivate yourself to get outside and get active. Even if you spent the majority of winter hiding indoors, setting goals is a great way to start an active spring and will increase the likelihood you will be successful! Make sure your goals are realistic, specific, and measurable!

Even if you were active all winter, setting goals is still a great way to have a great spring. Think about if you want to explore new trails, try a new outdoor activity, or maybe even kick a bad habit you had last year. Whatever it is, goals are a great motivator for everyone!

DO YOUR RESEARCH

With spring weather, comes spring storms and snow. This shouldn't be a deterrent for anyone trying to get outside. What this does mean is that you will need to do your research and plan trails that no longer have ice or excessive mud. Depending on location and exposure, some trails will be ready to go the day after a storm, while others may take several days to clear up. Research ahead so your plans don't get ruined! Additionally, read information online to see if there is any trail damage or possible closures from winter months.

CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENT

Make sure to check all your gear before getting started. There is nothing more annoying than getting excited about a hike, bikeride, climb or anything else, just to realize your gear isn't up to the challenge. Making sure your bike is good to go or your boots aren't worn out will be a great step in making sure you are ready to get outside!

LOOK FOR OTHER WAYS TO GET OUTSIDE

Getting back outside after your winter "hermit crab" mentality doesn't always have to involve exercise. Sometimes, just being outside in nice weather can be a great way to boost energy. Look for fun and enjoyable ways to get yourself outside! Farmers markets are a great way to do so. Our local market's opening weekend is this Saturday and we cannot wait to go. Other ideas can be looking for a local concert or festival, going on a picnic, planting a garden or even going mini golfing. Whatever it may be, make sure it is something that you will enjoy and get you outdoors!

While all of these tips can be used, the most important thing is to get back outside and enjoy your passions! Think about what rejuvenates and motivates you and create a plan to do those things!
